Well, I never had a mis-spelled name situation, but once I purchased a ticket online at united.com, and I transposed my first and last names. UA insisted that they could not change the name after the ticket had been issued, but they did make a notation on the PNR. The gate agents didn't have any problem with it, and just laughed. Whether they find your fiancee's situation as amusing, well who knows???
