You are so right, soitgoes, our show passes do include local rail fares. I will check out Essen. We actually have friends who live there so it would be a good chance to see them as well.
I think that you (or the website) may have inadvertantly switched the search location to Frankfurt. Mainz is 19 miles from Frankfurt. As others have suggested Dortmund is often a good location for inexpensive Hilton prices - but only if there isn't a convention in town.
