You are so right, soitgoes, our show passes do include local rail fares. I will check out Essen. We actually have friends who live there so it would be a good chance to see them as well.

Hilton Koeln might be 19 miles from the center of Duesseldorf (nice Hilton, BTW). Mainz is a very good distance away. You could do a lot worse than the Cologne Hilton. It is easy walking distance to the train station, numerous restaurants, the cathedral, and the main shopping street.
