I wouldn't want to work near a somking room either. However fundamentally, smoking is still legal. The compromise that I make with smokers is that they must do their habit in a ventilated controlled room.
Smokers who light up just before getting on the airplane smell just the same for any smoker. We nonsmokers notice it more as we are no longer accustomed to smelling the scent.
Again this is about compromise and making everyone happy. The smoker is slightly put out by having to light up in designated enclosed areas and the nonsmokers have to put up with a minor discomfort of smelling the trace scent for the first few minutes.
The smell is the same reaction as getting into an elevator with a smoker. Would either of you refuse to get into an elevator with a smoker?
