A very good point lost on the airport authorities (especially YYC).

I believe, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but the airport authorities would not have to abide by the Provincial or City legislation as airports are a federal matter.

My understanding is based upon experience in YYC. The city enacted legislation but the Airport still allowed smoking rooms for an additional four months. The airport switched to completely nonsmoking inside and only allowed smoking accross the street from terminal building is special buss shelters.

Although I am a nonsmoker and big believer that people should quit smoking, I think the present sitution where a smoke cannot be "enjoyed" while past security area is a little too much and just adds to the stress of an airport experience. The smoking rooms (with proper ventilation) were a good compromise.
