That is essentially what Skybus does. Only difference is that you can pay the extra $10 at the time you book the reservation. A friend who lives in Columbus says he does it all the time and it is well worth it. The advantage for Skybus, compared with the WN system, is that it gives them an opportunity for extra revenue from everyone no matter what fare they are paying.
The other variation is the one AirTran uses, where you pay extra bucks to reserve your seat in advance.
Personally, I think they are both better than the new WN system.
