I thought the main point to the people bringing in food from the outside was because of the inability to procure it in the sterile area (glucerna and other such meal replacements as well as formula). Last time I checked pretty much every airport has a ready supply of alcohol and unless your flying to/from NM on US Airways all flights do also.
