Searching for bargains

I'm interested in taking a quick trip to Europe sometime this Fall to accumulate miles. I'm very flexible on travel dates. I don't know of a good way, though, to search for cheap fares. united.com, Travelocity, and other sites I've visited require you to enter travel dates, so there's little hope of finding special deals. I tried Dream Maps on Yahoo which seems to be the same as Travelocity's Dream Maps. It looked promising, showing a fare of around $550 to Rome. However, when I got to the screen where you pick dates from the calendar, even though "available" dates were shown, every time I clicked on a date, it "X'd" them out and told me to try another. Any date I tried got X'd out.

In the olden days, United Connection's Super Shop was pretty effective at finding cheap fares, but it's history. Does anyone have suggestions?
