There should be no risk in putting yourself on standby for an earlier flight and then not showing up. If anyone has had problems with this, please let me know- very concerning!!
The one time I did relatively recently was when I was connecting in DEN from an AA flight to a UA flight to LAS. I had padded the connection with plenty of time since they were two separate tickets. When I did OLCI, I put myself on standby for the earlier LAS flight.
I did make it, but as I was walking up to the standby flight's gate, the agent said "Mr. cblaisd?" and I said "Yes" and he handed me a boarding pass. So he had indeed cleared the list before seeing I was actually there.
I am going to perhaps naively assume that if I hadn't shown, he would have done something to assure me that I was put back on my original flight. But if I hadn't made the standby flight and my boarding pass was rejected at my ticketed flight, I think it would be relatively easy for the agent to see what had happened and, again I assume perhaps naively, that he or she would do everything possible to make the situation right.
