Question about checking-in baggage on a connection flight

Hello all,

I'm going to be taking a flight from DXB to JFK (via LHR) on BA in Dec. On my return, I'll be taking a one-way flight from DXB - BOM, either on EK or AI (not too sure which one yet - depends on timing convenience)...

I was wondering if it would be possible to check my luggage all the way through to BOM when I'm checking in at JFK? The DXB-BOM sector will be on a separate ticket of course. If it does make any difference whether it's EK or AI, I can always book the ticket on whichever airline BA does have the tie up with for interlining...

Never really done this before so I'm not too sure, and would appreciate if someone could help me out with this.

Cheers...
