Well, the volcano is pretty active right now - so you gotta hit the National Park! That's a fascinating and unique experience. There is no food there to speak of - Volcano House's food is appalling - so pack a cooler if you will be out all day. Wear sturdy shoes and heed any safety warnings or advisories. The petroglyphs area on the road out to the active volcano area is also amazing and (for me, anyway) very moving.

I believe there is a Roy's Restaurant right in Waikoloa, if you like their food!

And try one of the snorkel boats that takes you to the bay where Captain Cook's monument is - we call that spot "The Tang Channel" because it always seems to be awash in curious tang species! I'm sorry can't remember the name of that bay - it's a long Hawaiian word - but I know there were multiple boats that took people out there.

We love, love, love the Big Island!

As for the airport, well, I always endeavor to arrive at least 2 hours before scheduled departure, even for a small airport like John Wayne. An unexpectedly long line to check in or at security can hold you up, and you don't want to start out your vacation anxious or stressed out!

Have a spendid time, Jeff!
