I believe a second runway at LGW is far more preferable than a 3rd at Heathrow. Traffic around Gatwick is usually tolerable even during the morning rush, and public transport is still a decent option.

With a little encouragment one of the main alliances, Star Alliance or Skyteam could take over North Terminal and create a proper hub - Skyteam Terminal at London Gatwick, if only!
