splatnz, chickiwi, and violist, thank you for your suggestions. Here's the list I've generated:

1. Hay's, 63 Victoria - specializes in NZ lamb
2. Minx, 96 Lichfield Street
3. Le Bon Bolli – opposite Art Gallery, Central City
4. Retour, Band Rotunda, Cambridge Terrace, in the historic Edmonds Band Rotunda overlooking the Avon River.
5. Speights Ale House, 263 Bealey Avenue
6. Mediterranean Cafe on Tuam Street - Italian
7. Saggio di Vino - corner. of Victoria Street and Bealey Avenue.- Italian
8. Terra Viva, Cnr Roydvale Ave & Wairakei Rd, near the airport, great breakfasts/brunches/lunches. It is located at a garden center and also has a nice gift shop.
9. Little India, Cnr New Regent & Gloucester Streets; 6 A Wakefield Avenue, Sumner
10. Two Fat Indians, 112-114 Manchester St, center city; 201 Papanui Road, Merrivale
11. Nobbano, 764 Colombo St, Corner Armagh /Colombo St,, Bengali food
