I had a forgotten spare tube of toothpaste in my toilet bag from COS to MUC, MUC to SYD, and SYD to MUC, and no screener ever noticed or complained. I did have my zip lock bag out each time I went through security (in those jurisdictions that required it).

I think security just wants a symbol of obedience. I'm thinking of packing a zip lock bag with empties in it in the future, and "forgetting" my travel sized liquids in the luggage as an experiment.
