Is this standard amongst all tickets nowadays? I have bought much more complicated tickets and changes have autopriced - it wasn't a problem then because the tickets allowed free changes.

I think this is what it comes down to. I will go to the Emirates office personally and take down the person's name and ask them to annotate the PNR that changes are allowed. Hopefully it will go smoothly. The savings [vs seperate tickets] are high and it is not possible to get a single airline itinerary. There is a through fare on AC [EK KHI-DXB and DXB-FRA-YYZ AC flight #s] but it is $1000 more per person x 4.
