Before my wife was a citizen, I used to wait with her on the non-citizens line. Sometimes, if the line was too long, I'd have her come with me on the citizens line and would just present both passports at the same time. We usually got the third-degree (I must look like I'm importing Chinese slaves or something), but my wife was never told to go wait on the other line.
