Even when seats are under airport control, most GAs won't assign non-status pax to them unless other seats are not available. I've been in flights that were more than 95% full, and sat alone in my three seat row.

Thus, I am pretty sure the answer is "no".

They'll also hold them for you if you're on standby ... a wonderful GA at DFW did this for me yesterday. AAngels confirmed and assigned a seat, but I was paged at the gate--

- GA "Oh, you've already got a seat!"
- me "I don't suppose you still have an exit aisle?"
- GA "Here ya go! I was holding it for you."
