You shouldn't be concerned. As you mention the flight has to return back, so cancelling the flight one way means the other way is cancelled too, not to mention having it sit at ORD is probably as expensive as it being in the air. Unless another aircraft goes mx and that's the only "extra" plane they have, then I really wouldn't worry.
