As for your OP, Jimster, what you were told is not true. You don't start earning e500s until you reach premier status, but how you reach that tier is immaterial to earning your first set of 4. Of course, as you point out, the miles you fly post-2P need to be BIS on UA (or UX or TED) to earn e500s.
Have you flown 10k BIS on UA since reaching 2P? If so, how long ago did you complete reach that mark?
