I've been on award tickets back when I had no status in varying classes of service and been stranded... overnight, a couple times... sometimes weather (as we know not technically covered for accomodation) and mechanical. Always been put up in a hotel at UA's expense. Sorry to hear about the situation.

Find out the true cause and bring it up with United Customer Relations.
