It sounds like you're describing the eastbound experience before the base turn, and at probably 6,000 - 7,000 feet as opposed to the view you'd be seeing if you were already on your base turn westbound, at maybe 3,000-4,000 feet. It seems that the right side would be better once you're on final approach, and have made the base turn, not to mention that you see nothing but the sky when you're sitting on the left side and making a near-180 degree turn to the right.
Yes, that is correct that I'm describing the eastbound leg before the turn. After the turn, you're at too low an elevation, and too far from the Hollywood Hills to see much except smog, plus South Central cottages and freeways to the right and left.
