Unfortunately, that's the risk one takes when they check baggage, which is worth more than BA's liability limit (1000 XDR/approx. 770 GBP).
BA, like most airlines, offers an option of increasing that limit at the time of check-in at an extra cost:

The special declaration is charged at a rate of $25 / £14 / €21 per passenger.

For anything above that, insurance can (and should) be purchased from a 3-rd party insurance provider.
