I have, indeed, seen an FA ask for ID. It's rare, but it has happened. The person was under 21 and was politely told that AA's policy is not to serve under 21, even on international flights. I don't know if that is the policy, but that is what the person was told. This, FWIW, was a domestic flight, in coach, so the international part was just an add-on by the FA.
