The judge in my case (Los Angeles county) said before voir dire that anyone with travel plans could go back to the jury clerk and postpone service but they would have to start their week of waiting all over again on the new week. If we stayed for voir dire then we had to serve if called. I chose to stay and take my chances and ended up as an alternate and missed my business trip (which everyone involved knew was possible as it was scheduled last minute after I had picked the jury duty week).

The people I work with travel a lot and we have always been able to negotiate a specific week for postponement for when we expect to have quiet schedules. I have done my service during the week between Christmas and New Years at my request twice in the past fifteen years. If you don't mind, it's a very quiet week at court and a short week because one day is a legal holiday.
