That is correct. You do not get extra flexibility this way even if the upgrade books into C. The only advantages I can see in it booking in C rather than I are:
1) you will be able to choose your seats right away even if you are not an EC member (this happened to my parents last week).
2) for promotions that exclude I class (eg: current bonus miles promo for European members), the flight
might conceivably qualify, although I am unaware of anybody having actually benefitted from this and being able to confirm it for sure.
