DUF answered to crucial points.
Generally *A upgrades are very homogenous among the carriers. They require coach booking classes Y or B or Biz booking classes D or C. The carrier whose miles you are using sets the 'price' and the rules for the ug, not the carrier your are flying.

UA demands online-only application for *A upgrades and they have shut down the *A upgrades until further notice.

Your best shot is to find someone who gives you miles or vouchers from another *A program to perform your upgrade. But please only worry about it when your fare is actually upgradable!
