I remember in Dec 2005, i was supposed to be on a DTW-FRA flight but took a bump to go DTW-AMS-FRA. I went searching high and low for my bag at the baggage claim area in FRA and finally after a while they found my bag in one of their storage rooms where they had placed it because my bag had arrived on my original flight.
They just might not have had time to unload my bag since they needed to get the plane out on time and the DTW-AMS flight was leaving at about the same time so YMMV
