I can tell you that flight attendants at American have been asking for 2L boarding for years. In Miami, what we have always been told is that there are quite a few gates that have old "fixed" jetbridges that make it difficult to safely use 2L.
As more of the AA gates change over to new jetbridges when AA moves into the new sections of the terminal they will then make it a standard procedure. What we have always heard from the Station Manager is that the chances of aircraft damage is higher if 2L is allowed at some gates and not allowed at others.
The explanation has made sense to many of us, but it seems that it should be a major priority since it has such an impact on the boarding period; especially for first class passengers.
You have to know that it is not any fun for F/A's to try to surf the aisle during boarding trying to do predepartures. I am always willing to do it, but it will happen quicker and easier with 2L.
