A few months ago I booked First Class SFO-JFK 1:45pm departure for late November. Yesterday I received a call saying that due to aircraft changes, this particular flight is being cancelled. Unfortunately, First Class isn't available on the earlier 7:00 and 8:55am departures. So we accepted a downgrade to coach and they are refunding us the difference between First and Coach fares ($350 per person), which I'm sure is standard procedure on any carrier.
But where it gets interesting is they are extending to us a $499 per person future flight credit. I asked the agent repeatedly if this was in addition to the $350 per person refund for the fare difference, to which she replied "yes".
I must say I'm impressed with their "compensation package". I can't imagine main stream carriers offering much of anything outside the refund for the fare differential. Okay, maybe a $50 credit for future travel, but certainly nothing like $499.
