As to the rest of your question -- I've flown this route four or five times this year. The 747s are definitely starting to show their age, but the C experience isn't bad, particularly in the upper deck. The flights have been pretty full, at least the ones I've been on, but I haven't had trouble clearing upgrades when I've requested them.
