I'm not sure if this is standard procedure or was a one-off (or two-off!)? Meal orders were certainly taken by status however, as the purser whispered to me saying that I was the only Gold in the cabin and could have first pick at any of the mains. ^ (Especially relevant as only two hot-pots were loaded for a packed J cabin!)
By the time I fly back from LHR - YYZ in Jan I *HOPE* my silver status will have kicked in^, and that it will let me have some choice over meals (seeing that I've chosen 1A for now and it's a day flight). Serving order and pattern changes all the time, at least that's what my ex with AirCanada tells me.
Let's hope the seat-snatchers won't be at it again too!!
