Regarding the claiming of gate checked items, I have seen these sent to baggage claim, that's true but, IIRC, usually in very small airports.
Obviously if you're in the front row, you're getting off as quickly as possible. But, as a general rule, RJ's unload more quickly since they have fewer passengers and, of course, there will always be somebody in the back of the plane...
