Panam's landing message at LOS...

I realize that talking about Panam makes me look very old, but I used to fly regularly the infamous PA route between Nairobi and JFK via Lagos, Monrovia and Dakar.

The standard announcement on landing in Lagos included "Passengers in Transit may disembark if they wish to do so but we strongly advise them to remain on board"

The game was that flights were routinely overbooked and overchecked against "dashes". Everybody leaving the plane was completely unsure of keeping his/her seat. Though I never saw anything exceptional happening on these flights, I witnessed a fellow passenger on Cameroon Airlines leaving the plane at the Lagos stop between Abidjan and Douala, returning to his seat amidst much noise and commotion, only to be chased, clubbed and dragged out by the Nigerian thugs , I mean "police".

Nigeria, a great place to avoid.
