Kinda reminds me of the old joke that not even god can hit a one iron. I had something similar happen to me on AA, MCI - ORD. I got to MCI okay with three or four clubs in one of those mini-mini bags (like a sock. If you had a driver, it would only hold the one club.) When I when to fly home after a number of weeks in Topeka the security agent at MCI quoted the rule. For those of you that have not been to MCI, each security area only serves two gates. I told the guy I would gate check, all the while planning on just carrying them on. So the 'guard' walked me to the crowded gate. He told the gate agent what was going on. I said (and I rarely pull a stunt like that) "I'm Platinum, what is the problem?" No problem and I carried them on. Before I would check them I would have thrown the old pig iron away and just brought the putter home. I took some very old metal clubs to play on a par 3. I left the real clubs at home. In the long run, the clubs got tossed out here away. Steel shafts are just so passe.
(edited to note I was flying AA)
