Yeah, the miles might be a deal breaker. I'm on L fares through NRT connecting to CX to HKG so that might be the best option. But, if I go through PVG I have a 2 hour connection where as NRT is only 1 hour. I'm worried about the 1 hour NRT connection, but I'm told its easy to go from AA to CX in NRT. Do I have to clear security?

Things may have changed, and I can only say from my recollection. They are in the same terminal. You need to clear security airside, and when I was there last, it was quite quick. You need the onward BP or ticket to pass the security.
One hour is good enough if there is not a bad delay.
