Like airlines, they oversell even though some seats may not be taken, or sell more even when the seats are all taken. They are covering themselves from the person that does not show up. They are not lieing to you, stretching the truth. So, as I said, make a reservation online and present it to them. They have to honor that. Or check in twice. If you are platinum, they might give you two gifts.
Thanks for the responses to all. If they are overselling, they need to take a better look at the revenue management system, as the rate was the cheapest I have ever seen at this hotel (140 GBP per night!), and was considerably less than our corporate rate of 224 GBP for club level. I understand they are not lying to me, but I have seen this enough times to know that Marriott in particular seems to be very cautious about selling rooms at the desk, yet online/rez centre/etc they are willing to sell. Strange overall.. I am only a gold member, so no gifts for me anyway, and at this hotel at least I have NEVER had an upgrade of any type whatsoever. The location is excellent however, so... (oh the hotel in question in the Marriott Marble Arch London UK).
