My question is is this a sign of "trouble" for me when I go to book my return in a few weeks (I was hoping for a Saturday) or is there hope as the AS award seats on BA come from a different inventory?

My own experience is that they match - if it's there on ba.com then it's available to book using AS miles, and if its isn't it isn't.

Have you looked at PHX - I have always been able to get FC award seats thru PHX on pretty much any date I needed them - and have generally then been able to switch the booking to a more preferred airport closer to the time (typically 2 weeks out) when additional inventory was released.
