The Washington Post sent reporter Mike Tidwell to the closest land to the actual antipode of Washington, D.C. (your closest-to-antipode as well).

The article, titled "Far Be It", ran in that paper's Travel section on March 8, 1998. It's available for a fee from the Post's archives.
