Ok just curious...........I realize the extra miles you get when being a PLAT versus a GOLD member, but does the 72 hour upgrade window matter much when requesting an upgrade? I rarely get one as a GOLD and I understand that everyone and their mother is a GOLD, so I just happen to luck out when I get one. However when I become a PLAT, will my upgrade chances get better? I understand the window is 72 versus 24 hours, but does that really matter?

I am 4,500 miles shy of Platinum the old-fashioned way and looking forward to it. I have had very little success upgrading on my routine flights to the SF Bay area, while my Co-Workers who are Plat and EXP Plat have much better success.
Usually, you will board one call ahead of GOLD as a Plat which can mean the difference between getting or not getting that special OH BIN you love.
And I would have loved to gotten 100% bonus miles on the 50K I will have flown this year, vs. 25% as a Gold... that is an extra 37,500 AAdvantage miles.
One other benefit worth mentioning is that if you are Plat and don't qualify for anything the following year, I believe you get a "soft-fall" down to Gold for the next... so its kind of like having a one-year elite status extension for when you quit traveling.
