While I realize that, and recognize that they may even occasionally be useful, it still strikes me as another example of the random searches that we are being conditioned to accept in the name of security, whether at borders, public events, airports, or elsewhere.

IMHO the next logical step is a true national identity card in the name of "consistency" and "security" of course.
