McDonnell Aircraft merged with Douglas Aircraft in 1967 (http://www.boeing.com.au/History/douglas.html)

The DC-10 was first introduced in 1968, a full year after the merger (http://www.boeing.com/commercial/dc-10/index.html)

The "DC" nomenclature was merely following the tradition of the DC-2, DC3, etc.

The MD-11 was launced in 1986 (http://www.boeing.com/commercial/md-11family/index.html) and I clearly recall the "unspoken" reason was because all of the fatal crashes.
