The DC-10 was first introduced in 1968, a full year after the merger (

The "DC" nomenclature was merely following the tradition of the DC-2, DC3, etc.
The MD-11 was launced in 1986 (
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/md-11family/index.html) and I clearly recall the "unspoken" reason was because all of the fatal crashes.
