ANY activity will extend their validity 18 months - there are links to threads on earning miles, sometimes for no expenditure (such as taking surveys, or registering credit cards with Rewards Network / iDine) so she can earn sufficient miles to get an award for you (or someone else?) (See the Unofficial Users' Guide sticky.)
