And because it is on another carrier (AQ, I presume), United will not know that you did not board at KOA. Take it for what it's worth, a chance taker like me would try to board at OGG without reissuing this ticket.
The OP wasn't referring to a UA flight from KOA-OGG. S/he said that a booking was made from OGG to ORD on a UA flight that stops in KOA enroute (that would be UA Flight #3, a 777 that makes a circle route, flying ORD-OGG-KOA-ORD). This a peculiar flight in that UA sells it as either ORD-OGG, ORD-KOA, OGG-ORD, or KOA-ORD. UA does *not* sell it as an inter-island flight (OGG-KOA).
