Yes, my way of formulating it wasn't as clear as it might have been. Yours is indeed the way I do it.

My naming convention for saving files to my hard drive would be 0601@LAS-LAX for a reserved trip from Vegas to LA on June 1. If it is an unreserved itin, I name it #0601@LAX-LAS. You can create your own way of identifying reserved and unreserved itins.
I do something similar except at the end of the file name, appending -bak to the name of the actually reserved one.
