Not only do I concur with what you suggested, I'd take it a step further and continue monitoring the fare until the trip. Should the fare drop after the ticket is purchsed, you can still get a voucher for the fare difference.
Good point! What I learned though was in order to do that I needed to have saved a copy of the exact itinerary under a different name, since otherwise the saved copy on my system synchs with the one on UA's and doesn't show the current fare. Or is there another way that I'm missing?
