Also, I am not sure about UA but I think there might be tax implications on buddy passes also.
While not really tax implications, the employee does pay per class/miles flown. I remember in 2000 it cost about $30 dollars or so to fly 1st from JFK-LAX. Which was taken from the next pay check after the flight was taken.
