Regardless of the reason, there is no excuse for the plane crew to not make an announcement to the passengers. It's actually surprising that they didn't, since most flight crews are eager to pass on the blame in cases like this.

There could be any number of legitimate reasons, but it's inexcusable that neither the pilot nor a FA took 30 seconds to explain it.
