Trier has a lot of Roman ruins. 2 baths, an anphitheatre, and an old gate among other things. It's also the birth place of Karl Marx.
I think training to FRA would require taking a train up the Moselle to Koblenz and then changing for a line up the Rhein. I say training may be a hassle as that was when I ran into the unreliability of the previously-vaunted DBB. Trains late, and trains cancelled. In summer.
There's always the wineries (the Moselle makes its own style of Riesling) and a somewhat-forgotten part of Germany otherwise.
