You can still purchase a ticket on AC for DCA->YYZ->MSP (or wherever you want to go) as long as you use the multi city format. It doesn't need to be separate tickets.

I wouldn't touch UA to YYZ unless you get some sort of mileage perks for flying on their metal. AC has much more comfortable planes. Only downside is you are paying extra in fees with Canada and US customs etc.
