Plane arrives, people get up and the door does not open for 45 minutes, why?

I was so tired and uncomfortable after a long trip from Asia. I wanted off the plane... bad! I was so happy when the plane landed and quickly moved to the gate. I was almost home. The seat belt lights went off and everyone quickly got up and ran for their carry on bags and stood around me. ( I was in the aisle seat). I was pretty far back in the plane and could not see the exit door but I could see that no one was moving. A good 15 minutes passed before I heard anyone complain. Finally there was some tension in the air a few frustrated people started to start yelling, "open the door" but we heard nothing from the flight crew.

After about 45 minutes of waiting with all these hot and bothered people standing next to me in a now non reconditioned cabin the people finally started to move out of the plane. There had been no explaination or apology. What could have happened?
